Wearables category

Rome, 10thOctober 2021. The G20 Innovation League has just ended in Sorrento. A special event
organized in the framework of the Italian Presidency of the G20, which brought together 100
startupsfrom the G20 countries, more than one hundredventure capitalists, and big international
companies.
The project, strongly desired by the Italian presidency, was designed to continue over time and
become a point of reference in innovation. Its peculiarity lies in having brought together not only
the most promising startups of the G20 countries but also institutions and investment funds,
favoring the creation of collaborations and new business projects during the event itself.
The pandemic has confronted us with new challenges. To build a more sustainable future, the
contribution of institutions and companies is not enough. It is necessary that new ideas and
entrepreneurial projects of startups can play a role of primary importance.
It is no coincidence that five fundamental issues have been identified that will have the most
significant impact on the future of the planet: clean technologies (so-called Cleantech), the potential
and risks of artificial intelligence, the efficient use of the Internet of things (IoT & Wearables),
smart cities (new mobility) and the future of healthcare.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Luigi Di Maio, opened and closed the meeting, underlining the
importance of international cooperation to face the present challenges and innovatively rethink the
future.
The event saw the ICE Agency, CDP Venture Capital SGR, and Simest at the forefront of the
organization. The international guests gathered in Sorrento were also able to listen to the speeches
of prestigious Keynote Speakers and the Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs with responsibility for
internationalization, Manlio Di Stefano.
The real challenge was to encourage new international investments and strengthen cooperation
between public and private actors on innovation. For this reason, the idea of relating startups with
possible investors, with the possibility of organizing B2B meetings with venture capitalists and
international companies.
The startups, called to present their projects and to propose technological solutions, participated in
fivechallenges, two young companies were awarded for each category:
1) Clean technologies (so-called Cleantech), awarded: Act Balde Ltd (Uk) and Biomicrogels
Group (Russia)
2) The potential and risks of artificial intelligence, awarded: Ruangguru (Indonesia) and
Ntechlab(Russia)
3) The efficient use of the Internet of Things (IoT & Wearables), awarded:Zerynth (Italy)
and Poka (Canada)
4) Smart cities and the future of mobility, awarded:Dott (Netherlands) and Virtuo
Technologies (France)
5) The future of healthcare, awarded: Sansure Biotech (China) and Nalagenetics (Indonesia)
Many innovative ideas were presented during the contest, with infinite potential to redefine the
future.
The UK startup “ACT Balde Ltd,” awarded in the Cleantech field, has patented and already put
into operation a new generation of wind turbines on several systems. Thanks to their design, the
wind turbines can be 32% lighter and 10% longer than conventional ones. These qualities lead to
the production of 9% more energy in wind farms and other advantages in reducing faults and
interruptions. The second startup awarded in the “Cleantech” category is particularly topical
because it deals with hygiene and sterilization. Biomicrogels Group was the first company in the
world to apply the principle of reversible solubility of natural polymers used in the medical industry
to water treatment and cleaning of hard surfaces.
The Smart Cities & Mobilitycategory, on the other hand, saw the recognition of Dott (Holland)
and Virtuo Technologies (France), confirming the innovative potential of the sharing economy in
the world of transport. With a fleet of 45 thousand e-scooters and 11 thousand e-bikes, Dott
manages to offer sustainable mobility solutions to over 400 thousand users in 30 cities in nine
countries every month. At the same time, Virtuo is focused on travel outside urban centers
according to the same idea of sharing mobility. Already present in four countries and 20cities, the
French company promises a concrete solution to trips out without the burden of having to own a car.
One of the most exciting categories is Artificial Intelligence, an area where we are between reality
and science fiction. The solutions offeredby Ruangguru (Indonesia) and Ntechlab (Russia),
awarded in this challenge, are very concrete. The first created an app already supporting over 20
million students and offering personalized learning paths. The second goes into the field of video
analytics thanks to an algorithm capable of breaking all records in terms of speed and accuracy in
recognizing faces, silhouettes, and human actions, as well as identifying vehicles.
Furthermore, the Canadian startup “Poka” has created an application (web and mobile) for
companies’workers who can acquire, use and share strategic information in real-time, leading to
greater productivity. This technology facilitates standardized multimedia knowledge of procedures,
training content, and solutions for each workstation and machine. Poka is joined by the Italian
Zerynth in the IoT and Wearablescategory, thanks to an IoT platform capable of accelerating the
digital transformation of companies. It is an ecosystem of hardware-software tools (which can be
integrated with existing IT technologies) that allow, for example, monitoring to optimize industrial
processes, energy consumption, predictive maintenance, and the retrofit of industrial machines.
Last but not least, the Healthcare category, mainly felt in this period. Nalagenetics (Indonesia),
which has created a customized prescription platform to offer accurate tests and tailor-made
solutions according to the different needs of doctors, patients, and laboratories, won the awards. It is
followed by the Chinese Sansure Biotech, which deals with the research, development, production,
sale of reagents, diagnostic tools, and third-party medical testing services. Among the products
developed by the company is the Advance Magnetic Beads Technology, which uses modified super-
paramagnetic nano-spheres to absorb DNA / RNA from a sample analyzed with high purity, making
screening processes more effective and rapid.
In closing, the handover to the Director-General of the Indonesian Ministry of Communications and
Informatics Semuel A. Pengerapan. Indonesia will be the rotating president of the G20 and will also
handle the 2022 edition of the G20 Innovation League.
